Hi,
Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.
Some times
loose stool in children takes longer to subside. Is your baby breast fed or not. Breast fed babies have a very low chance of infection of the gut.
Monitor for signs of
dehydration.
They include
1. Decreased skin turgor
2. Increasing thirst.
3. Sunken eyes.
4. Irritability.
5.
Drowsiness.
6. Decreasing passage of urine.
Oral rehydration solution or any other solution containing salt and sugar should be given.
Probiotics and Zinc prescribed by your doctor will be useful.
Apart from infection there could be other causes for the passage of loose stool. One of them is
lactose intolerance. Is your baby having blood or mucus in the stool. Presence of blood or mucus in the stool indicates
dysentery and bacterial infection. In such cases antibiotics are indicated. Most of the cases of loose stool are caused by virus and antibiotics may not be of much help.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
