What Is The Pain In Chest And Back With Uneven Rib Cage?

My finace has an uneven rib cage. He went to the doctors and they took a x-Ray and told him he may have to have surgery to extend the one side of his chest. He has not had that surgery. He is now complaining of chest and back pain. He is only 17 years old. What should we do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hi,
Any change in the shape of the chest wall can lead to vertebral bend (scoliosis) leading to bone pain (back pain) due to difference in weight bearing while standing or working. similarly, unequal expansion of chest can cause undue stress on the joints of rib cage and can cause chest pain.
As suggested by doctors, you may have to go for surgery as still he is young and can potentially suffer worsening of pain as his age increases, and his bones fuse.
all the best.
