What Is The Meaning For The X-ray Report Of Chest?

I have been a chronic asthmatic since an early age. I have had pneumonia several times and had Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1997 and 2001. Located Just outside the left lung near the main aortic nerve. It was removed and I went through maximum radiation nd some chemo therapy.

Since than I have had little scrares here and there. About 3 days go I started to get a sharp pain in my left lung chest area. It is painful and I severely short of breath. I went into the doctor and he did an X-ray of the chest.

Findings were as follows;

The lungs are remarkable for decreased lung volumes.
There is no evidence of air space consolidation or pleural effusion.
The lungs are remarkable for increased vascular lung markings.
Low lung volume nd vculr crowding versus chronic lung disease changes.
Low lung volumes.

What does all of this mean?

My doctor is supposed to call me later but did tell me briefly that there was not any pneumonia and possibly my left lung collapsed partially????????

What the hell? Are there any next steps or what is supposed to happen???

Thank you.

Radiologist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

In your chest X ray, the lung volumes are decreased. It means that the lung tissue where gas exchange takes place is lesser than normal and this can be due to various reasons like old infection, and after chemotherapy and radiation. There is also prominence of the lung markings.

There is no active disease in lungs right now. The decrease in lung volume may be because of a long term (chronic) condition. If your breathing effort is normal then there is nothing to worry. You may consult a pulmonologist who will do spirometry test to know if the breathing capacity is normal.
