Hi my partner has been perscribed codeine today for chronic toothache, he is also taking ibruprofen and paracetamol. He has taken 240 mg of codeine in the last 10 hours and has only just fell asleep (1st time since friday)I am expecting him to wake up in a couple of hours in pain again so is it ok for him to take a bit more until he has his emergency dentist tomorrow at 11am?Many Thanks Caren

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain the maximum dose of codeine that can be taken in a period of 24 hours that is in a single day is 360 mg in divided doses..
Secondly as he has already taken 240 mg of codeine in the last 10 hours and also taking Ibuprofen and Paracetamol, therefore I do not think he should take codeine further to avoid side effects as it is a narcotic painkiller..
I would suggest that he can continue with Ibuprofen and Paracetamol combination as advised and if pain is severe Ketorolac can be taken..
Another important thing is that if pain is chronic then proper evaluation by a dentist and treating the tooth root canal treatment or extraction is permanent solution as painkillers will give temporary relief..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
