What Is The Light Yellow Discharge After Menopause?

Hi, I m a 53 yr-old woman who had her hysterectomy at 40, with removal of cervix, but my doctor left my ovaries in tact. I had postmenopausal symptoms at 38, went through menopause after my hysterectomy for 3 months only to have it show up again 10 yrs later full blown, as my ovaries magically disappeared! Since my hysterectomy at 40, I never had any kind of discharge... unless I had been obviously taking an antibiotic. About 2 months ago, maybe less, i was put on antibiotic, then given gosh, can t remember the name of it to correct the discharge, or what i thought was a horrible yeast infection... but it didn t. It s actually gotten worse. I have to take a shower 2-3x a day. The weird part is: It doesn t itch, it doesn t smell like any yeast infection I ve ever had in my life before... but it def. has an odor... it s cream to light yellow in color, and it s becoming unbearable especially if I m working, as it causes chafing! Changing type of pants or underwear really makes no difference! HELP!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello!
I read carefully your query and understand your concern.
The way you describe, it is clear that you have a vaginal infection.
Post-menopausal women are very susceptible to vaginal infection because of the physiological changes after menopause.
The cause of this infection may be a bacteria normally present in vagina(bacterial vaginosis),or yeast infection,or Trichomona vaginalis,Viral infection.
Since you already have been taking antibiotic for this infection I would try to avoid empirical treatment.
You should do a vaginal smear (microscopic examination of discharge material) and also a culture of this discharge to find the exact cause of this infection.

I suggest to consult a gynecologist, get the test done in order to take the right treatment.

Hope it helped.
Take care.
