Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband was admitted to hospital today and they find 10% heart function, with leaky valves. He has COPD and they are talking about defibulator if chemicals/drugs do not help. He can not catch his breath. I am trying to find information about possible life expectancy if defibulator is possible help.
After reading. The medical details provided by you of your husband I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that having a 10 % LVEF means a severe LEft Ventricular dysfunction. Drugs are going to provide very little symptomatic relief. The problem with such a low heart function is that these patients are very prone for fatal cardiac arrhythmia leading to sudden cardiac death. To prevent this sudden cardiac death DEFIBRILLATORS are advised. In your husbands I case if I would have been your treating doctor I would advise you to go for CRT-D instead of going for a simple DEFIBRILLATOR. That's because CRT D also synchronize the cardiac rhythm thereby improving the heart function up to camera in extent and also prevent sudden cardiac death.
As such there is no fixed life expectancy after having a defibrillator because the patients also have multiple comorbidities which also affect the life span of the patient.
May God Bless Him
