Endocarditis=inflammation of the inner lining of the heart (endocardium). This usually happens on top of a congenital abnormality, a diseased valve, or a prosthesis. This could happen due to spread of infection from a remote source like an infected tooth, due to a surgical intervention, e.g. tonsillectomy, due to inappropriate asepsis during cardiac surgery, or due to drug abuse. Treatment is usually difficult, and is in the form of massive antibiotics +/- surgical removal of the cause.
