What Is The Effect Of Xanax On The Fetus?

I am about a month pregnant and been taking Xanax for 2 years.. very low dosage but without it after 24 hrs I cannot eat, sleep, and even have difficulty drinking liquids. I do not want to hurt my baby but not sure which is worse, to stop taking completely or continue with risk of any aby difficulties.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Xanax is a benzodiazepine drug and it is not advisable to take this drug on regular basis for more than 4 weeks unless needed urgently. Though the drug in low doses is considered as safe for developing fetes still any medicine can harm developing fetes so should be avoided in first trimester. If that is not possible then please try to reduce the doses to minimal possible doses and quit the drug in third trimester. This will not cause acute withdrawal symptoms in baby and the baby will be safe. Excess use of Xanax during pregnancy might result in decrease in growth of developing brain. Please visit a psychiatrist for evaluation and help.

Thanks, Take care
