Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just commenced taking lyrica (75mgs twice daily) for nerve pain due to a herniated disc. I am concerned that I may have to be on this drug for awhile. I have read all about the side effects, I am particularly concerned about putting on weight. I have relief from the pain having just taken four tabs so far over two days. How long is it necessary to continue to take this drug? regards Joan
Medications can cause weight gain by: (1) increasing appetite (2)Altering metabolism (3)affecting fullness (4) affecting activity and energy level.
It is possible that lyrica may cause weight gain but if you are conscious about what you use (eat or drink) and maintain an active lifestyle (as possible with the disc) then this is unlikely to occur. You would need to continue use till the pain resolves.
I hope this helps
