What Is The Difference Between A Cyst And Inguinal Hernia?

hi, how do i tell between a cyst and a inguinal hernia? I have had a history of cysts in my groin area however this lump seems to be more akin to the signs and symptoms of a hernia. It is not overly painful however on palpation there is some discomfort. It does seem to reduce with lying down however i cannot definatively tell.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Inguinal hernia is characterised by defect in the abdominal wall and abdominal contents passing through the defect into the hernial sac.
Te contents move into the sac with increasing intra-abdominal pressure like after coughing, sneezing, etc.
The contents of the inguinal sac reduce after lying down.
Inguinal hernia may be associated with pain.
If all these symptoms are present, there is every possibility of inguinal hernia.
Cysts are uncommon in the inguinal region.
However, an ultrasound of the abdomen is required to know the origin of the lesion.

Thanks and take care
