My aunt is 68 yrs. old. She had vaginal bleeding. Pap smear result showed Paucicellular smear with associated autolysis in a background of inflammation. She is being given antibiotic and vaginal suppository. Is cancer eliminated already ? Her cervix is small, no lesion but doctor said easily bleeds. Thank you
The commonest cause of such bleeding is atrophic vaginitis or cervicitis. Another cause is cancer. As the pap smear is paucicellular it means that adequate cells were not there [ pauci means scanty, so it says the cells were scanty].
The chances of cancer are low as there is no visible lesion. However, if there is bleeding on touch then it is better to get a cervical biopsy done to rule out any cancer as a pauci cellular smear does not rule out cancer satisfactorily.
