What Is The Cause Of Rib Pain During Pregnancy?

I am 37 weeks pergant and about a week ago I woke up with a terrible pain in my right rib. Everyday this pain seems to get worse, and normal activities seem to get harder to do. The pain feels like I m being stabbed with a knife. I have been to an OB doctor who says that it seems like it would be floating ribs. But the pain never let s off or gets any better. I have been having a really hard time breathing, walking, sleeping, using the bathroom, getting dressed, just at life in general. Any ideas of what this could be?

Hi,
I can understand your concern,
\Last two ribs in rib cage are not attached to chest bone these are floating ribs.
the pain in right side of abdomen in 37th week of pregnancy is mostly due to - increased abdominal size due to fully grown baby and sometimes excess gases in bowels (lac of good digestion/ constipation)this causes pressure on the floating rib tips which get painful.
- Associated calcium deficiency leads to weakness of ribs which get more proned for pain.
- Rarely liver/ urine problems may cause such pain.which your doctor must have excluded while examining your wife.
What she needs at present is -
- Light, easy to digest, nutritive diet in small amount & repeated servings (every 3 hours)
- A light exercise in form of walk after each meal,
- some digestive enzymes/mild purgatives to alleviate constipation may be added with your doctor's consultation.
- Calcium/ vitamin D supplements as per your doctor's advice.
- No massage.
- Light application of painkiller gels locally ( Ibugesic gel) along with some aerated drink may help worse pain.
- Be positive, the pain is going to disappear after child birth.
Thanks
