What Is The Cause Of Pain In The Left Wrist?

Around 10 a.m.,12-year-old boy. Working on spelling, in good mood, excited about meeting Uncle for lunch. Was writing with right hand. Left hand was resting on table. Suddenly, left wrist aches. Mom holds arm above heart level, massages, pain stops. Suddenly tired. Lies on bed and feels short of breath. Complains of chest pain. Complains that left calf aches. Pains end, but feels tired. Listened through stethoscope. Heart seems normal. Shortness of breath continues. Uncle shows up. Left home. Went to a restaurant. Son seems to be breathing better and talking a lot. While eating lunch reached for heart once. Returned home and looked tired again. Went to urgent care mid-afternoon. He seemed okay there. Her diagnosis: growing pains. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

Before finalizing it is "Growing pains", heart and other body problems should be excluded first.

It is normal for children of this age to suffer of intermittent pain. This is due to growing process. The pain starts after having a very athletic day and usually is located in the soft tissues (muscles).

If you think that your child has been very active, you can give him acetaminophen at bedtime to relieve pain after such an active day.

All the best!
