What Is The Best Diagnostic Technique For The Pain In Ilium Are Having Diagnosed For Neurogenic Bladder And Swollen Ankles And Feet?

Hello I am a 66 year old male..I hyperextended my low back lifting a 35 year old client into the bathtub 21/2 years ago..I have had surgery in the L-5 to L-1 areas 2 years ago. I still Have serious pain in the illium area about 4 inches off to the right of my spine around the beltline area.. The pain prevents sleeping. Upon standing after sitting for 10 minutes or so, the front of my right thigh goes numb and tingly.. also there is a burning sensation about 1/2 an inch under the skin at the same area. When standing straight up and leaning either to the right or left, it will generate a sharp pain in the same area...Also I get cramps in my calves, ankles, feet and toes 3-5 times a night, 8 being the most. this also prevents sleep.. I need to get up and walk them off.. I have also been diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder. Also both feet and ankles have swollen up several times. The pain in the illium area makes my right buttocks feel like a large bruise... Maybe I have torn muscles or ligaments in that area? What is the best diagnostic technique to examine the area?

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

From your history, it seems that there might be some entrapment of the nearby nerve/nerve roots, which is causing your pain, cramps and numbness in the leg and toes. If I were your treating doctor, I would advise you for an MRI of the spine with special focus to the operated area. This MRI could give us a true picture of the bone, ligaments, muscle, and nerves, apart from giving us information if there is any bulge of the disc pressing the nerve roots. Further management would depend on the investigation report.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
