What Is It That Is Causing Passing Of Grass Green Stool?

My 2 year old daughter has been having grass green stool. At first it was slimy now it is pastey. She does complain of her stomach hurting. It is really descended and bloated. At first I thought it was a stomach bug but it has been going on for about a week or so now. Beginning to think it could be something more. Any advise?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
First thing you have to rue out is Green leafy vegetables and artificial coloured agents like green chocolates, ice creams.
If you are giving her green leafy vegetables regularly, this could be a cause for her green stool.
second thing is any supplements.Vitamin and other supplements may contained colored agents and it may cause green colored stools.

If she take any one of these, then it is considered to be normal and can be return to normal stool color after stoppage of the supplement or green leafy vegetables.

Our bile is usually green in color. As it travels through the intestine turns into brown. That is why our stool is brown in color.
If your child have diarrhea or food poisoning or use of laxatives can decrease the transit time of bile .
This may end in non conversion of bile from green to brown and the stool will be brown in color.

Please confirm whether you have used any laxatives or whether she is suffering from any food poisoning or diarrhea.
This will come back to normal after treatment with antibiotics.
Please wait for some more days. If you find any cause which i mentioned above, then nothing to worry.
If she develop any fever, abdominal pain, black stools or jaundice, then you must consult your treating physician.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
