What is done during Lateral Sphincterotomy Surgery , Anal Dilation and is it painful ?

Hi, I have been suffering anal fissure from 3 months and all medicines have failed. Now, doctors have told me that I should go for the Lateral Sphincterotomy Surgery and Anal Dialation. I would like to know what actually is done in the procedure and if it is painful or not. Thank you.
