General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, I am Dr Samarth, cerebral atrophy is a condition in which the brain tissue starts to degenerate. This is a serious condition because the brain tissue starts contracting and the brain function decreases.
In a newborn, it could be due to Birth asphyxia, Hydrocephalus or congenital infection.
Prognosis is poor in such cases and if the condition is progressive, the child will deteriorate further. Child might have seizures, lethargy or neurological deficit.
Child might develop mental retardation later on.
