What Is Causing Throat To Tighten While Drinking And Difficulty In Swallowing With Hiccups?

For the last two days when I drink water I can feel my throat close or tighten. It is hard to swallow and I get the hiccups. I don't have any throat pain but a couple weeks ago I did have a sore throat for three weeks and was spot tested for mono with neg results. What could be causing this?

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding difficulty in swallowing though you have no pain and however hiccups are there.

As you said your culture report of throat is negative for mono is a good thing but as you are having sore throat that means there may be some inflammatory swelling in pharyngeal walls and there is possibility of associated LPR (laryngopharyngeal reflex) which may cause difficulty in swallowing and hiccups.

You may take-

1- Antibiotic (broad spectrum).

2- Antacid with PPI.

3- Adequate fluid orally.

I hope above will help you otherwise consultation with ENT doctor will become necessary.

Regards.
