What Is Causing Muscle Weakness, Pain And Fatigue In Limbs After Accident?

My elderly mother (96) has never had any medical problems or sickness in her lifetime. She has low blood pressure, does not take any medication only vitamins. Recently found to have problems with her breathing when exerting herself or walking - scheduled to see a Heart Specialist on Tuesday. As the driver she was involved in a minor car accident just before Christmas. Within weeks after the accident she started to get muscle weakness in her limbs, pain and fatigue. She can hardly get herself out of bed (she lives alone) or up from a chair now. After numerous blood tests and x-ray the GP doctor can find no immediate cause for her symptoms. She is quite frustrated and impatient as this is the first time she has been incapacitated.Any thoughts on the matter?

Hello and thanks for your question. How lucky you are to have such a healthy mother. I am glad that all of her tests were normal. I suspect that the trauma of the automobile accident caused several things to happen to her. First whenever we are involved in a trauma out nervous system pours out stimulant transmitters to help us react quickly to the trauma. In elderly people this can take a while to recover from. Also in a trauma, you can get micro-tears in muscles and tendons and these can also take a while for the body to repair. I would advise her to drink plenty of water (it can flush out the toxins) and do gentle exercises with her arms and legs often. Hopefully she will recover and be back to normal soon. As we get older it just takes longer to recover from a trauma, even if it is minor. Good health to you and thanks for using HCM.
