Hello,
A high
triglyceride level responds to a reduction in fructose (
high-fructose corn syrup, read labels and fruit), an increase in the fats contained in nuts/seeds/olive oil/olives/avocados, supplementation with 1 gram of
omega-3 fatty acids (500 mg DHA/500mg EPA), exercise, a reduction in
saturated fat and elimination of
trans fat. So, please do not give this patient juices as he wants, but rather limit fruit servings to 2 per day ( 4 ounce juice, 1/2 banana, 1 small apple). Avoid sugar. The HDL should increase with regular exercise of at least 150 minutes per week.
Iron deficiency is treated with diet by combining your fruit serving with a high source of iron for better absorption. High iron foods are found mostly in meats, but vegetarian sources are fortified cereals, molasses and spinach.
Did the doctor determine why the iron deficiency exists? Is there blood in the stools -do a hemoccult anyway;
colonoscopy, upper gi? If an iron supplement is used, take it by itself with food as it interferes with other vitamins and nutrients and medications. Generally 60 mg of iron sulfate is prescribed for repletion as we only need about 18 mg daily from our diet. So, yes, how did this anemia occur??? I hope this address your concerns. Thank you for visiting me at HCM. Please come back again. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
