What Does White Spots On Tonsils Indicate?

Hello, I have white painless spots on both tonsils.. I know they re not tonsil stones, and I was checked for strep, and it came out negative... The doctors think it may be Mono, but I m not experiencing any symptoms other than fatigue... I m starting to get a little worried, because I have no idea what it means.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query. The white spot on tonsils can occur due to may reasons . As you already ruled out tonsil stones and bacterial infection .

There can be two reasons for white spots on tonsils .

- Firstly it can be caused by virus infection condition is known as mononucleosis or mono . Sometime flu like symptoms appear little latter , its better to go for diagnistic test.

- Secondly the white spots shows the healing process of infection which is good thing .

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist (ear, nose, throat) for proper diagnosis .

Doctor may order antibody test and white blood cell count test to confirm the diagnosis .

Usually no specific treatment is there for mono . Treatment is given to relieve the symptoms.Doctor may prescribe corticosteroid drugs (prednisone )to counter swelling and antibiotics for secondary infection.

For now do warm saline rinses several times a day , drink at least 8-9 glasses of water (important) and take over the counter medicines for pain like tylenol .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
