What Does Tightness In The Back Muscles Indicate?

I am unable to rest at night due to muscle tightness in back. During the day I am virtually pain free. X-rays and MRI revealed nothing. My shoulder and thumb also became very sore. Dr prescribed Prednisone. Almost immediately all pain was gone. After taking all medicine the pain returned. Another round of Prednisone relieved all pain. Now that has run out back pain. Returned and now pain is in my hip. Muscle relaxers and pain killers provide no relief. Any ideas?

I can understand your concern.
Your muscular pain is relieved only by prednisone (steroid) and not by painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs.
So possibility of myositis (inflammation) is more likely.
Steroid is said to be best anti inflammatory drug. Myositis related muscle spasm and pain relieved only with steroid.
So better to consult rheumatologist and get done clinical examination, muscle biopsy and serum ANA (anti neutrophil antibody) to find out the cause for myositis.
