Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father s test report shows HOMOCYSTEINE levels to be 65 µmol/L via C.L.I.A technology. After reading online about it, I further noted that his 25-OH VITAMIN D (TOTAL) level is 9.05 ng/ml. Also, his VITAMIN B-12 level is 180 pg/ml. His age is 50 years. Can you please let me know the meaning of these and the procedure I should follow now? Thanks!
Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. The normal plasma homocysteine levels should be 4-17 micromoles/liter. His levels of 65 micromoles/liter is clearly elevated. The normal Vitamin D level should be more than 25 ng/mL. His Vitamin D level of 9.05 ng/ml is less than normal. The normal Vitamin B12 level should be 200 - 900 pg/mL. His level of 180 pg/mL is less than normal. Since homocysteine levels to come down is dependent on Vitamin B12 levels, he needs to be given Vitamin B12 supplementation in the form of injections and oral medications, along with Folic acid and Vitamin B6. His Vitamin D levels can be improved through supplementation orally along with calcium and phosphorus. It also could be synthesized in good quantity on exposure to sunlight regularly. Recent research implicates high Homocysteine and Low Vitamin D levels are associated with coronary artery disease. Hence it would be better to keep these parameters under control. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
