What Does This MRI Scan Report Indicate?

My father has been experiencing stomach ailments (nausea, diarrhea, extreme queasiness and some fatigue) off and on for many months. He had an MRI from his chest to his pelvic area done yesterday evening in which they told him results would take about two days to come back. However, they called the very next day (today) and said they found a shadow close to his left vertebra and said he should schedule a full body scan. What could this shadow be and why would they order a full body scan first?

The shadow mentioned in the report could be a tumour or abscess.
The different lesion show different features on MRI.
In elderly patients the first thing to rule out is a tumour as its a serious thing though its not that common. Vertebral bodies are commonly affected in case malignant tumour due to metastasis. Its better to do a whole body scan to rule out primary malignancy.

There is possibility that it could be an abscess because of tubercular infection and your doctor want to rule out pulmonary or other infections. But it is less likely to advise whole body scan in later case.
