What Does This MRI Report Mean?

I have several questions about a recent MRI, my regular Doctor never informed me of. What does "Post surgical change at L5-S1 with associate metal artifact" mean? Right paracentral annular tear at L3-4 mean? and Moderate right paracentral disc protrusion at L3-4 with some neural encroachment mean? Thank you for your help, I am in so much pain I can hardly stand it, and not getting help from my pain management docs..........

Geee thanks for letting me know I needed to pay for this questions ahead of time..........

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

1. "Post surgical change at L5-S1 with associate metal artifact" means

The area where surgery was done is presently showing expected changes after surgery including the presence of a metallic plate or screw that was inserted.

2. Right paracentral annular tear at L3-4 mean? and Moderate right paracentral disc protrusion at L3-4 with some neural encroachment mean

This refers to the disc at level L 3 - L 4 showing degenerative changes where the disc between two small bones is showing tear and is slipped backwards and is causing pressure and narrowing of the neural foramina on either side which causes pain due to impinging of nerve roots more on the right side.

You may need to also discuss weight reduction measures with you doctors. The nerve pain may be controlled with restricted physical activity and pain relief medication. Please do not do heavy physical activity till you are comfortable. If the pain persists in spite of restricted physical activity and proper pain relief medications for few months then surgical treatment can be thought of. Laser assisted surgery is becoming popular in this area.
