What Does The Texture Of Thyroid Gland More Coarse Mean?

Hi there,

I don't have a lot of information given, as my doctor was very vague and rushed me out. But a month ago, she told me that my thyroid looks rather larger than a normal thyroid. She sent me off for blood work and an ultrasound. The blood work came back normal, however my ultra sound results came back abnormal. She said that the texture of it was more coarse and she'd refer me to an endocrinologist as she doesn't know what to make of it. She wouldn't explain to me what it meant so I need help regarding this.

I'm a 24 year old female, about 115 pounds. I relatively have a normal diet, I don't really go out of my way to eat healthy. I'm usually always tired and have no energy, I've been like this my whole life. Other than that, I don't have any other symptons.

Please help! Thanks! :)

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
At your age the autoimmune disorders of the thyroid are very common.
The first stage of the disease is manifested with the ultrasound changes of the thyroid tissue and high level of antibodies.
Later on the thyroid hormonal level is changed, the symptoms starts and treatment should be started.
What you should do is to check:
-Anti TPO antibodies
-Anti Thyroglobuline antibodies
If they result to be high, you should keep the hormonal level (TSH,FT4 and FT3 ) under closed follow up (check them every year).
For the moment the thyroid is not the cause of your symptoms.
Hope the information is helpful and do not hesitate to ask if you will have further questions.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta Guni
