Hi good day! I have my pap smear last march 10 and it says here: specimen adequacy, satisfactory for evaluation but limited by severe inflamation. The descriptive diagnosis says benign cellular changes infection: predominance of coccobacilli consistent with shift in vaginal flora. Reactive: inflammation (includes atypical repair) Comments: severe inflammation, abundant neutrophils. Please help me to explain this result i truly cant understand. Thnx!

Hi, The pap smear report is indicative of an infection of a certain coccobacilli which has affected the endocervical cells. Any bacterial infection, there will be increase of neutrophils to remove the infection. There are plenty of neutrophils, leading onto terminology, severe inflammation. When there is inflammation, the body tries to repair, so few reactive nuclear changes are seen, which are sometimes abnormal due to infection. The report says that you have coccobacilli infection, for which you would require treatment. If you are above 40 years, you might require another pap smear after 15 days of infection treatment. Hope this helps. Any further query, happy to help again. Dr. Prakash HM
