The ‘multiple well defined heterogeneous hypoechoic lesions’ seen on ultrasound scan of your mother are Fibroids. Fibroids are harmless /benign growths seen inside the cavity of the uterus/on the surface of uterus or in-between the muscle layers of the uterus. Uterus is the womb. They are not having the appearance of being cancerous. The uterus/womb becomes bulky when it has fibroids/fibroidal changes in it. The largest fibroid mentioned in the scan report is on the top broad end of the uterus. The endometrium is the lining of the womb (this lining is lost every month as a period). Endometrial thickness of 12.7mm shows that the uterus has fibroid changes. Is your mother having any symptoms like heavy bleeding with clots, prolonged bleeding, pain in lower abdomen/back, pain in legs, constipation, urinary problems etc? Management can be done either with medication or with surgical procedures. Sometimes a period of watchful waiting is all that is needed especially if she near the menopausal age. There are various different surgical procedures like embolization, myomectomy etc. Hysterectomy is not commonly done these days for fibroids. Which option to choose – whether watchful waiting, medical or surgical would be dependent on patient’s symptoms, their choice of treatment, their age, if the woman wishes to have further pregnancies and if the woman is around menopausal age etc. I would advise you to consult a gynaecologist.
