PAP smear is a good indicator of
bacterial vaginosis. In bacterial vaginosis only a few
epithelial cells are clue cells which are loaded with bacteria on their surfaces. More than ten percent of the female population has been involved worldwide in bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is characterized by a thin malodorous
vaginal discharge due to an alteration of bacterial flora caused by a shift in the acidity (pH) of the vagina. While bacterial vaginosis is a genital, or perhaps a sexual disease, it is not considered a
sexually transmitted disease. Sexual contact is not responsible for it's presence nor is it spread through sexual contact. It arises from changes within host allowing for the disproportionate proliferation of native bacterial species.
Treatment
1.
Metronidazole 500 mg orally twice daily for seven days
2.
Clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream 2%, one full applicator (5 g) intravaginally each night for 7 days
3. Metronidazole gel 0.75%, one full applicator (5 g) intravaginally twice daily for 5 days
