I'm 70 years old male, Height 5.6ft, weight 70 Kgs with no history of BPH. Four weeks ago I had surgery under general anesthesia for left inguinal hernia. Six months prior to surgery my PSA reading was 3.56. Today it's 50.8 ng/ml. What does it mean? Does PSA rise after surgery? Will it drop down in due course?

Infectious Diseases Specialist, Dr. Arun's Response
Hello, Thnx to contact us. If I am your treating doctor I would like to advice you that PSA is the prostate specific antigen, which is very specific for the prostate. It is the most widely used cancer screening protein. Its normal value is 0-4 ng/ml. elevation beyond 10 ng/ml is confirmative of carcinoma. In your case I suspect it to be malignancy. I advice you to do a detailed examination for prostate for malignancy. Also I advice you to do PSA velocity which is a better tool for carcinoma. If you have anything else to ask please contact me. Thanx. Dr. Arun Tank
