What Does Soft Indentation On Head Along With Headache Indicate?

I have noticed that my head on the top of my skull has gross indentations. I did bump it a considerable time ago, with no consequences, however my head is now very misshapen. I am 53 years of age, female in good health but do suffer headaches/migraines and have done since my third child. The area can be sensitive to touch when pressed in the depressed areas. It reminds me of the skull of a newborn child when they have a soft spot . Is this anything to worry about?

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The indentation over skull bone could be

: birth defect - different individuals have different a symptomatic shapes of skull. It can be that and present for long, but it got noticed because of pain.
No treatment is needed for it. However observe it and consult doctor if it's size increases.

: degenerative defect - It could be age related osteodegeneration which is aymptomatic. It happens due to age, osteoporosis, sclerosis. It is painless.

No treatment is needed.

: post traumatic - It occurs after significant head injury and painful in acute stages. It could be outer table fracture or depresses fracture. Usually it is managed conservatively if detected late and asymptomatic. Consult doctor and get CT head done to know about fracture.

: mass lesion with bone lysis - It occurs with lesions like dermoid, epidermoid, or bony lesion. You can suspect it if you feel any mass. It can be confirmed by CT head with bony cuts.
If you signs are matching with it, consult doctor for management.

After confiing diagnosis, further treatment can be given. Regarding headache treatment, it can be due to bony defect or non specific headache. If non specific, it can be managed by

: Get vision and BP checked
: Rule out sinusitis by sinus examination
After ruling out above causes, it can be suspected to be due to
: Tension headache if whole head, dull pain, band like sensation
: Migraine if half head, vomiting, fear from light.

It can be treated by
: Tab Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription
: Bed rest
: proper 8 hours sleep daily.
: Avoid bright light, mental stress
: Migraine can be treated by preventive and abortive therapy.

Hope it will help you. Still in doubt, you may ask another question.

Thanks. Take care.
