What Does On And Off Tingling In Fingers Suggest?

I have awoken each morning for a week with tingling of my fingers. This symptom is gone after being awake for 2 hours. Last night I was awakened from a sound sleep with very strong pain in my right palm extending to all fingers in my right hand except my thumb. On a scale of 10 the pain was 8.5. I took 2 extra strength tylenol and was able to fall asleep after 1 hour. The tingling of fingers has continued today x 8 hours. What does this sound like? I have not experienced any recent injury. I have learned to crochet recently and this is my only new event. Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear patient
There are two possibilities 1. Vitamin B12 deficiency 2. Cervical disc prolapse with nerve root compression. Possibilities of first cause is higher considering your case since you did not mention anything about neck pain and radiculopathy. Is it right side only or bilateral? If it's single side nerve root compression is more likely. So u need to be investigated to confirm cause. First I would advise serum levels of vitamin B12. Ask for MRI of cervical spine with screening of whole spine to rule out disc prolapse. If serum levels of vitamin B12 is less you need to take Injection of vitamin B12 1500 mcg on alternate day for 3 days and then weekly for 6 months. If mri shows disc prolapse you need to consult expert neurosurgeon. All the best
