What Does Lochia Turn Brown And Smell?

I had an emergency c-section 12 days ago, and in the last 5 days or so I have noticed the Lochia bleeding turning a dark red/brown color, becoming slimey, and it now had developed a foul smell. Also it hurts to urinate. It burns slightly (but not like an UTI) as well as a pain in my uterus almost like a mini contraction. Should I be contacting my OBGYN now or is this something I can discuss at my 6 week appointment?

Thank you for the question and thank you for visiting our site.

In the setting of an emergency C-section, the preparation for surgery (called sterile technique) is not as ideal as when there is time to prepare for the surgery. This means that you are at risk for skin infections, uterine infections and bladder infections. While these risks are low, based on what you are describing to me, you need to contact your OB/GYN for guidance and to be seen soon. It may be normal for the lochia to turn a dark red/brown as it slows down. It is concerning, though, that there is a smell, pain with urination and uterine pain.

I hope that this helps and good luck!
