hi. I just had my abcess drained and I would like to know what it means when my doctor "Packed" my abcess. This was yesterday and I was told to come back within 48 hours for my packing to be removed. Does it hurt removing my packing? and do they need to make another incision into my skin while removing it? thanks
Packing an abscess means to insert some material like sterile gauze containing antiseptic solution into the abscess cavity. Sometimes after an abscess is drained, the opening gets sealed, pus again collects inside and abscess reforms. To avoid all these, packing is done. It helps in keeping the incision open so that any pus formed from the cavity walls, gets drained from the opening. This helps in quicker healing and prevents reformation of abscess.
Regrading pain while removing the pack: The pain will be slight and only for a moment. You must already be prescribed anti inflammatory tablets that help to control pain. So do not worry about it.
