What Does Hypertrophy Mean?

I was placed on Altace 10 years ago for what i was told heart is pumping blood out too forcefully and has caused some hypertrophy . Can you tell me the term for this? I was also put on Diltezem for some reason some type of tachycardia . I dont have nor ever had hypertension and 90/64 is regular for me. I have stopped both of recent but can not think of what conditions were called at time of prescriptions begun, seems like both were SVT or some combination of similsr letters. At that time i was living a very stressful life and found to have reflux and a hiatial hernia, that were treated and i remain on Nexium for control. My MD has retired but I need to know what those dx are. Thank you.

Hi!
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.
Altace is a trade name for Ramipril which is a drug used to treat high blood psessure.
Hypertension put the heart in difficult working condition because heart has to pomp blood through vessels with high resistance and heart in order to afford this extra work try to adapted by increasing it size
Hypertrophy is the increase in the volume of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its component cells.
Cardiac hypertrophy is a thickening of the heart muscle (myocardium) which results in a decrease in size of the chamber of the heart, including the left and right ventricles. A common cause of cardiac hypertrophy is high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart valve stenosis.

SVT is acronym for Supraventricular tachycardia is a rapid heart rate (tachycardia, or a heart rate above 100 beats per minute) that is caused by electrical impulses that originate above the heart's ventricles.Diltiazem is used to trat this condition.

Nexium is a trade name for Esomeprazole,a drug used to treat stomach problems such as gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, ulcers ect.

Hope I was able to help you.
Take care.
