What Does Ejection Fraction Of 20% Indicate?

Aug. 6th. This year, my daughter took me to ER were I was diagnosed with a WidowMaker, 100% blockage of an artery to my heart. The team placed a stent in my artery. I was in the hospital for 11 days. I did not have high blood pressure. I have been trying to be careful of my cholesterol level, but the detected that was high. I was given prednisone which I did not like. I was weaned off after 14 days. I take low dose aspirin, half in am of Metoprolol half at dinner, Brilinta 90 mg.,twice daily, Atorvasta 80 mgs.once a day. They said I only have 20% of my heart functioning. Should I be getting my ducks in a row? False leading, thought this was a service no charge!!!!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi!
A normally functioning heart should have an ejection fraction of 55% and above.
20% means that your heart is able to pump out only 20% of what it receives. It will lead problems like fluid in the lungs and abdomen etc. Also it causes severe tiredness because of the reduction in oxygen carrying capacity.
Sometimes with diagnosis of the problem and treatment ,the ejection fraction improves upto a certain extent - but its a must. You must take your mediations regularly and also follow up with the Cardiologist regularly. Avoid Salt in your food
