What Does Creatine Level Was 2.99 Indicate?

My father was not able to go urinate Nd we took him to hospital they said he had a distended bladder. They put a catheter to help drain but also told us his creatine level was 2.99 what does that mean for him. His kidneys were already functioning pretty low?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

A serum creatinine of 2.99 is slightly high. The normal values in most laboratories is up to 1.8 mg/ dl. Serum creatinine is a reflection of kidney function. If his serum creatinine was already low then there must have been a condition causing the kidneys to function sub optimally. This can be due to medical renal disease or obstructive pathology. Since you have not mentioned the cause of present bladder obstruction, I assume it is due to an enlarged prostate which is causing complications like retention. If obstruction is present for more than 10 days then the kidneys get affected irreversibly.
