My daughter had an operation 7 years ago i thnk it was a myringoplasty , she is now 15 and has been suffering with tinnitus, vertigo, and sickness and falling down for 3 weeks, Gp referred her to ENT and awaiting an appt, but i took her back today as she is in loads of pain and they have made her an emergency appt for tomorrow at ENT dept as they say they think they can see a perforation again and also white stuff all over the ear drum- she also has pain when touching behind the ear, the gp is querying a choleastoma- what is this and should i be worried or what else could it be

hello and welcome to health care magic,

I see your worry and I will try to help you out.
The white stuff which could be cholesteatoma is a condition seen in the ear. Although this is not a tumour or a cancer in the real sense it tends to spread in the ear and the surrounding area and is associated with many complications which of course are rare so you do not have to worry.

The treatment if confirmed is the complete removal by an extension of the Myringoplasty surgery and in good hands this is not a big deal. In any case I would advice you to take a CT of the temporal bones and an PTA and get back to me or any ENT with the reports.

Regards

Dr Sriram Nathan
