What Does Cervical Area Measuring 1.1 Cm Mean ?

I am a female, almost 56 years old. I have been bleeding for about 5 days. Before that, it had been about 2 years since I had a period. When I visited my doctor, he said that cervical canel was closed and he had an untrasound on my abdomen area. After the ultrasound, te doctor said that my cervical area measured 1.1 cm but the doctor said that 7mm was normal. He has scheduled a DNC for next week-- My question is that how worried should I be? I do not know of any family history of cervical cancer--thank you for your information

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Your bleeding qualifies by definition as post menopausal bleeding.
Any kind of post menopausal bleeding needs evaluation.
I think what you mean by cervical area is actually - endometrial thickness.
By ultrasound the thickness of the endometrium ( lining of the uterus ) can be measured.
If that is measuring 1.1 cm, it is thicker than normal.
It carries a definite risk of endometrial hyperplasia, a few types of which are precursors for endometrial cancer.
Yes, it is important to have a D and C and obtain a biopsy of the uterine lining.
That will tell you what are your odds of having a cancer.
I do not think you need to worry , as the chances are very small, less than 4 % in fact.
Being overweight, smoking and diabetes will up the risks though.
Proceed with the biopsy as advised and do upload the results so that I can guide you accordingly.
All the best.
Take care.
