What Do You Suggest For Loss Of Sense Of Smell, breath And Taste?

Dear Dr, my Aunt smoked for over 20 years, she quit for 8 years and started smoking again about a month ago. approximately two years ago she has lost almost all of her sense of smell, breath and taste due to her nose being constantly plugged, when her nose clears she is still able to taste and smell. Since her smoking she is now able to smell, breathe and taste regularly. We have done some research as to the negative effects of smoking on the nose but cannot find anything on the web that says why the smoking is causing her to regain her sense of smell , taste and allows her to breathe better. We both know that smoking has more negative effects than positive but we are looking for a more healthy solution to help her regain her senses lost in a more appropriate and healthy manner can you please give us some better insight as why this is occuring?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi friend,

Thanks for your query.

Chronic smoking has affected the mucosal lining of the nose, nasopharynx (inner part of the nose and back of the throat which contain nerves responsible for conveying smell/taste sensations to the brain.

Further, the blocked nose may be due to either polyps or thickening of the inner nasal linings, which cause impaired sensation of smell.

The healthiest way to regain her senses is to QUIT SMOKING; use of nasal decongestant drops x4/day and steam inhalation through the nose(to open up her nasal passage), ; and, Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin 1.5mg/day).

Consult your doctor. He will prescribe the advised medicines in appropriate doses.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.
