My father in law is 85 and has congestive heart failure; biggest problem is out of breath with any activity, OK sitting. Has a sleep apnea machine that forces air in at night and he sleeps well with it; if he doesn t have that (as in the hospital), he can t lie down for long. Has been put on a new heart pill which should strengthen walls of heart and regulate heart beat (has irregular heart beat). He signed himself into the hospital again, this time because he decided to get off some of these pills which he felt are causing more side effects than helping, and as always, it feels like a pill is added to fix the side effect, which in turn creates another side effect. At 85, I am wondering what medication he REALLY needs. I feel like a 65 year old would need to worry about longevity, but at 85 let s be frank: make him comfortable! I wouldn t think he really need to worry about cholesterol (long term issue). High sugar? Blood pressure? I know each person is different, but wondering who would be this frank with us?
