What Do The Ultrasound Reports Indicate?

I am 25 weeks pregnant.My 18 week ultrasound report says that "Placenta is situated at the fundus and extends along posterior wall. The lower edge of placenta covers os. It shows grade I maturity."Now, my 24 week ultrasound report says "Placenta is posterior grade I. Asymmetrical partial placenta praevia".I want to know how it is possible to have praevia if the placenta is situated at the fundus? I also want to know what these maturity grades mean?

Thanks for writing in.

The placenta is fixed in final position only after 28 weeks. Right now it may still migrate in position and the the position can remain fundal with the no previa. However this will be known correctly only in the 30 week scan. I understand that you have read else where about the fundal position of placenta being safe from previa but at the moment you are in 24th week and still the uterus is small enough for the placenta to occupy fundal position and yet extend upto the os and be termed as previa.

Placental grading (Grannams grading) is done from 0 through 3 and is based on its appearance on ultrasound. This refers to placental maturation which is important to know especially in pre mature deliveries.
