What Do The Blood Test Results Indicate?

My son has been having abdominal pain for a week, vomiting, & extreme fatigue and overall seems very unwell. I took him to the ER yesterday and an ultrasound showed patches/shadows on his Liver. After a full blood work up liver enzymes etc...nothing showed up abnormal except a total Billirubin of 17 and low sodium of 130..Is there something I should be worried about or is this just a virus?

Hi!
welcome to our site!
Your son having bilirubin 17 is significant and must be investigated further. Many laboratories report only the total bilirubin level, the sum of the conjugated and unconjugated portions. It is important to determine the fraction of total serum bilirubin that is unconjugated versus that which is conjugated. This is most useful when all the standard liver test results are normal, except the total bilirubin. the conjugated bilirubin is sometimes referred to as the direct-reacting bilirubin and the unconjugated as the indirect-reacting bilirubin.
Elevations of the unconjugated bilirubin level may indicate an increased load of bilirubin caused by hemolysis or gilberts syndrome.
so kindly get the test done so that it can be worked out further.
Hope this helps.Take care!
