What Do Swelling And Tingling Sensation In The Upper Lip Indicate?

About once every two weeks half of my upper lip will swell and have a tingling sensation. Changes from one side to the next with no regularity. It looks like I got a moderate punch in the mouth and is noticeable but not horribly so. The tingling comes and goes with the swelling. No other symptoms occur. I can clarify that the swelling and tingling does not ever cross the mid point no matter which side it's happening on and 90% of the time it's the upper lip.

It last for two hours on average and goes away as mysteriously as it arrives. It first began about a year ago and seems to happen during the last half of the daytime hours.

I'm 56 and in good health. I see my doctor for medical checkups and am 5' 8" and 177 pounds. My blood pressure has always been good and on the low side. I play golf regularly, work hard in the IT field, and have been exercising moderately hard for the past 9 months.

The problem doesn't appear to be more than a nuisance but the tingling makes me wonder why it would do that. As I indicated it's not horribly swollen, just moderately.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Swelling and tingling sensation of the lip which comes and goes seems to be most probably an allergic reaction causing Allergic Angioedema of the lip..

So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room when you have swelling so that they can do an allergy test to rule out the exact cause of the swelling.

Once the allergen is ruled out avoid exposure to it to avoid swelling..

You can be advised anti allergics like Levocetrizine or Benadryl to reduce swelling and also do cool compresses over the lip..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
