What Do Severe Pain In Ankle Radiating To Knee With Swelling And Bruising Suggest?

About 6 weeks ago I got a terrible pain in my left ankle (mainly around my (inside) ankle bone). I could not walk on it as I would get excruciating pain going up my leg - the next day it felt as though I had a steel cable all around my ankle and my leg felt twisted from the knee down. There was some swelling (not a lot) & very little bruising. I thought I would give it a few days - unfortunately it didn t improve. I started wrapping a tensor around it when I had to walk, but it got very painful after about 15 minutes and I found if I was carrying anything heavy it would get worse. After about two weeks I had an x-ray which showed nothing. It has now been six weeks and I am showing no improvement. I am assuming I have a torn ligament, but in the meantime, my knee and hip are starting to give me problems because of the way I am limping/walking. I have been doing some stretches as pain allows and trying to work through the pain, but am at a loss as what to do next. can you offer any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear.
Welcome to the HCM.
I have gone through your history and it seems that you might be having swelling of joints because of autoimmunity. For example Rheumatoid arthritis or synovitis.
Since xray some times come normal so I would suggest that first you may get done some blood reports for RA factor and ANA factor,ESR and get an appointment of rheumatologist and discuss further in person.Hopefully it will help you to rule out the cause.

Dr.Maheshwari
