What Could Pain Above The Patella In Knee Indicate?

Just today I was stepping up on the arm of my couch to get something and my left knee instantly hurt. It doesn t hurt when I stand and there is very little to no pain when I walk. I really feel it when I stand up from a squat or bend down to one. Even then it s not a terrible pain it s probably about a 5 or 6 on a scale from 1 to 10. The only way I can describe where the pain is approximately right above the patella. What could this possibly be and what should I do to treat it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
From history if you are elderly then this pain might be due to locking of knee joint due to some degenerative changes like formation of osteophytes giving this typical pain.
go for x-ray knee joint.
Go for patellar exercises daily.
Avoid more bending from joint and avoid squatting position.
Ok and take care.
