Hallow Dear,

Delayed period with softening of the cervix are signs suggesting the possibility of pregnancy. Softening of the cervix is classically noted after 6 weeks of pregnancy; i.e. two weeks after the missed period. However, this softening of the cervix should be confirmed by a Gynaecologist.

You had some spotting at the time of your expected menses. Very rarely such bleeding is known to occure during first 3 months of pregnancy. Hence, performing pregnancy test on urine helps to clinch the diagnosis. Your pregnancy test has reported negative. The key factor is the timing of performing this test. Performed too early, these tests are known to report false negative results.

Please perform pregnancy test on the overnight early morning first urine sample a week after your date of expected menses. Alternatively you may perform Beta hCG test on the blood. If still the test reports negative, you are not pregnant. In that case this bleeding has to be considered as very scanty menses.

You have mentioned about some small cyst; however the site of the cyst is not mentioned. Also it is not clear how this cyst was diagnosed. It very important to find out whether this cyst is responsible for such spotting. Therefore, you should report to Gynaecologist.

I hope this helps you.
