I had a sore throat and my doctor thought it might be strep throat. She prescribed antibiotics (Erythromycin), and in the meantime took a throat swab to send to the lab. Three days later, the swab came back negative and she told me to stop taking the antibiotics as there was no bacterial infection. I had always been taught to finish a course of antibiotics no matter what, but she insisted that I could stop as it was only a virus. Is this correct?
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query. The sore throat can be because of viral infection, since the swab culture has come negative for bacterial infection. Nothing to be panic, if it is a viral infection, it subsides by its own. You can take a course of antiviral drugs like acyclovir. Do saline gargling. I hope I have answered your query. Takecare.
