What Could Cause Loss Of Balance And Rapid Eye Movement?

Hi Dr. Samuel, I have a friend, that has a grand baby girl in the hospital, with loss of balance and rapid eye movement. they have done an MRI, there is not tumor in the head or stomach, what could be causing this??? the baby just turned 1 yr. and she started about a month ago with the symptoms.

Hi....By what you quote I feel that it could be a acute cerebellitis. This is inflammation of the cerebellum.... This is a part of the brain concerned with balance and smoothening of movements of limbs. The rapid eye movements you are describing is called nystagmus in medical language. These both symptoms exactly fit into acute cerebellitis. This is a self limiting condition and gradually the kid will recover. I am glad that an MRI has already been performed and tumours have been ruled out.
