HELLO: I ve BEEN TAKING OMEPRAZOLE 20MG FOR MANY YRS. NOW DUE TO THE HEARTBURN AND REFLUX MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED ME NEXIUM=ESOMEPRAZOLE.CAN I TAKE NEXIUM AS A 90 DAY SUPPLY FOR 1 YEAR? LIKE THE OMEPRAZOLE? I HAVE OSTOPENIA. CAN I TAKE IT WITH NO PROBLEM? OR FOR SOME SPECIFIC PERIOD UNTIL I FEEL BETTER?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Read and understood your history. Since you have heartburn and reflux, taking Nexium for so long I would advise you the following: Take antacid when on empty stomach. Acid in some form is also needed for formal functioning of the gastrointestinal system. Hence you can stop and sometimes try other ones like Ranitidine. Upper GI endoscopy, ph studies, esophageal manometry and so on should be done to determine the cause of your symptoms. Take Domperidone as a motility regulator. Take Vitamins D in therapeutic dosages and calcium for osteopenia; consult an orthopedic surgeon to determine further course of an action. For reflux, there can be surgery if required as indicated after full evaluation and on consultation with Surgical Gastroenterologist.
